Before we get to the specifications and actual performance of Nvidia’s latest notebook GPUs first things first. In order to justify the differences between the desktop and mobile GPUs Nvidia decided to add a “Laptop” suffix to the latter. In addition, the Ampere generation no longer features Nvidia’s Max-Q branding, at least not in name. Due to the fact that the configurable TDP range for these new chips is similar to or even larger than on previous generations there are quite a few peculiarities to take note of.
- Due to the extremely high variances in TDP performance between two seemingly identical GPUs can differ drastically. Unfortunately, those differences are often concealed at the time of purchase unless sellers or OEMs fully disclose the GPU’s configured TDP. Given that in the past some OEMs and sellers chose to avoid disclosing the use of Nvidia’s Max-Q variant instead of the regular chip you will forgive us if we are rather skeptical.
- Ostensibly slower GPUs can turn out to be faster than their more expensive and thus allegedly faster siblings. Think RTX 3070 Laptop high TDP vs. RTX 3080 Laptop low TDP. While this did happen on occasion in the past it was very uncommon and mostly limited to Max-Q variants.
- In some cases, the new chips are not any faster or even slower than their direct predecessors. Think RTX 3080 Laptop low TDP vs. RTX 2080 high TDP.
Test Systems
While potential customers might end up empty-handed on launch day and weeks to come journalists received more than enough test samples, although we should note that some of those were pre-production samples.
Asus provided us with the TUF Dash FX516P and the ROG Zephyrus G15 GA503Q, two thin 15-inch laptops equipped with a 85 W TDP RTX 3070 Laptop and a 100 W TDP RTX 3080 Laptop (both including Dynamic boost), respectively. We also received two fairly thin 17-inch notebooks, a Tongfang barebone-based Schenker XMG Neo 17 equipped with a 140 W TDP RTX 3070 Laptop (only in Overboost mode) and a Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR YC equipped with a 105 W RTX 3080 Laptop.
Given that most graphics benchmarks are GPU-bound the different CPUs (some AMD, some Intel) should not play a significant role. All relevant components are listed in the table below. The graphics driver installed was version 461.23 provided by Nvidia. Please note that we did not include any power consumption and temperature details in this test as those will be part of the soon to follow individual extensive reviews for each of these four devices.
Specifications
Unlike previous Nvidia generations where notebook chips were based heavily on their identically named desktop chips their latest generation mobile and desktop chips differ significantly from one another. The biggest loser is the RTX 3080 Laptop, which was cut down from 8,704 to 6,144 shaders, slowed down from a base clock speed of 1,440 MHz to just 780 – 1,110 MHz, and equipped with a memory interface narrowed down from 320 to just 256 bits. The amount of VRAM available (GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X) varies between 8 and 16 GB.
Truth be told, for a high-end GPU at this price point 8 GB of VRAM are somewhat poor considering the ever-increasing demands and requirements. Consider for example Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War that will hit the VRAM limit on 8 GB GPUs in higher resolutions and settings. The desktop equivalent has access to at least 10 GB of VRAM. However, the largest difference is yet to come: TDP. Given that it would be practically impossible to provide proper cooling for a 320 W GPU in laptops even with the latest and greatest available cooling technology Nvidia lowered the GPU’s TDP to 80 – 150+ Watts, which renders 200 W laptops at least theoretically feasible. Notebook OEMs are able to set the GPU’s TDP within this specified range freely.
Looking at the RTX 3070 Laptop we find that it, too, differs from its desktop namesake, although the differences are not as striking as they are on the RTX 3080. Shaders were cut down from 5,888 to 5,210 and the clock speed lowered from 1,500 MHz to 780 – 1,100 MHz. Accordingly, instead of 220 W the new TDP is specified between 80 and 125 W. The memory interface for its 8 GB of VRAM remained at 256 bits. Further details for Nvidia’s RTX 3060 Laptop will follow shortly.
Synthetic Benchmarks
Based on synthetic benchmarks the RTX 3070 Laptop low TDP variant performed fairly similar to an RTX 2070 (Super) or RTX 2080 (Super) Max-Q notebook whereas the high TDP model in Schenker’s XMG Neo 17 performed faster than an RTX 2080 (Super) and even managed to outperform our RTX 3080 laptops. Due to TDP constraints the latter only performed about as fast as a mobile RTX 2080 (Super). Regardless of TDP we have to come to terms with the fact that as expected Nvidia’s desktop GPUs play in a league of their own.

Gaming Benchmarks
The results are very similar when looking at “real” gaming tests, where our mobile GPUs performed (much) worse than their desktop namesakes and, depending on TDP, were either barely able to set themselves apart from their mobile predecessors or in some cases even slower. The table below contains all games tested by us that were not CPU-bound. Additional gaming benchmarks of these four as well as other Ampere notebooks will follow in the days and weeks to come, and we will update our GPU sites and list of games accordingly.
Generally speaking, we feel safe to say that both RTX 3070 Laptop and RTX 3080 Laptop are perfect companions for FHD (1920 x 1080) and WQHD (2560 x 1440) notebooks and fully capable of running all games released in the last few years smoothly in high to maximum details. This, however, also means that 4K gaming can get tricky, as some particularly demanding games, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Crysis Remastered, and Red Dead Redemption 2 will not run smoothly in ultra-high settings. In addition, Ray Tracing, which is supported by more and more games each year, should be avoided as well when gaming in 4K, unless you are using DLSS. In return, Ray Tracing performed adequately and well when gaming in FHD.

What do the corona virus vaccine and Ampere-based notebooks have in common? In both cases we might have to wait several months until they become available to the general public. Should the current shortages in desktop GPU supply (which also affect AMD) continue it might be very hard to get your hands on a current notebook in the foreseeable future.
All things considered we are struggling to provide you with an assessment of Nvidia’s mobile Ampere generation. On the one hand Nvidia deserves praise for how powerful thin and compact notebooks have become. Both, the Schenker XMG Neo 17 (RTX 3070 Laptop) as well as the Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR YC (RTX 3080 Laptop) are about as fast as their much thicker and heavier RTX 2080-based counterparts, such as for example the MSI GT76. In addition, we found it surprising how well these GPUs performed considering the drastic TDP cuts down to in some cases a fourth of their desktop counterparts. Yet against all odds performance did not plummet.
On the other hand, Nvidia took various steps to ensure complete and utter chaos by getting rid of the Max-Q branding that in and by itself was already anything but ideal, introducing the impractical Laptop suffix instead, and specifying an incredibly wide range of configurable TDPs. Even those of us familiar with the notebook segment and proficient in the matter at hand will inevitably struggle. In our opinion configurable TDPs should always remain within a range that would ensure at most a 20-30 % performance difference between the lowest and highest level. At the same time, a more expensive GPU should never be allowed to be slower than its more affordable sibling. In addition, if mobile variants differ that much from their desktop counterparts, we would have preferred the much more practical M suffix that Nvidia used in the past instead of the new Laptop suffix (e.g. RTX 3080M).
